  • Group (sometimes referred to as employer-sponsored) major medical insurance is a type of medical insurance that covers a group of people, typically employees of a company. In most cases, the employer pays a portion of the premium, and the remaining cost is shared by the employees. Employer-sponsored insurance plans often offer more affordable rates and better coverage (lower deductibles, copays, and out-of-pocket maximums) than individual health insurance plans. Major medical insurance covers a variety of health concerns, from simple annual wellness visits to emergency room visits, surgery, hospital stays, and more. Coverage can be available for groups with as few as 2 employees.

  • Group dental insurance plans may include coverage for preventive care—such as regular cleanings and check-ups—as well as restorative care, such as fillings, extractions, crowns, and orthodontic care. While some employers may choose to cover the cost of premiums, others do not, and employees pay the full cost of the premiums through payroll deductions. Employer-sponsored dental plans can be available to groups with as few as 2 employees.

  • Employer-sponsored vision insurance helps cover the cost of routine eye exams, prescription eyewear, and other vision-related expenses like contact lens fittings. Group vision plans often provide more affordable rates and better coverage options than individual insurance plans. Group vision insurance, while offered through an employer, is often not paid for by the employer; premiums are deducted directly from an employee’s paycheck. Employer-sponsored vision plans can be available to groups with as few as 2 employees.

  • COBRA (Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act) is a federal law that provides certain workers and their families with the right to continue employer-sponsored health insurance coverage for a limited time after employment ends. When COBRA is elected, the insured (former employee) must pay the full premium cost themselves, including the portion that may have been previously paid for by the employer. Not all employers are required to offer COBRA coverage.

  • Disability insurance is often referred to as paycheck insurance. This benefit pays employees for a set length of time when they miss work due to illness or injury after a specified waiting period. Disability insurance is usually offered as a voluntary benefit. This means employees who enroll have premiums deducted from their paycheck, and the employer does not contribute toward the premium.

  • Life insurance pays a benefit upon death. This death benefit is paid to the insured’s beneficiary. There are a variety of life insurance options, including both employer- and employee-paid options.

  • Supplemental or voluntary benefits often include benefits such as accident, critical illness, and cancer insurance. These types of benefits typically pay the insured person, not the doctors. The insured then chooses how to use those funds. Premiums for these types of benefits are almost always deducted from an employee’s paycheck.

  • Section 125 plan, also known as cafeteria plans, allow employers to deduct premiums on a pre-tax basis from employee’s paychecks for certain types of group insurance coverage. Section 125 plans provide tax advantages for both the employer and the employee.
